Zero Degrees of Separation

.
Last time I saw Frank Luntz, before the recent Q&A in the New York Times [milepost courtesy Thinkprogress], he was on Bill Maher's Show, preening in his almost/just gained? doctoral degree.

And being his usual lumpen self...

So when I came across this line in the Thinkprogress post, I was compelled to follow the link to the NYT and read the whole piece:

I’m not a policy person. I’m a language person.

It's the kind of careful distancing we see often from the consultancy, if we look closely.

As if, somehow, the stench of those they work for doesn't rub off on them....that it's just "process" or "ain't beanbag" or....

Mike Rowe would have a field day with this crowd as they gabble around, endlessly circling from one news network to another, proffering the same predictable talking points, in a cotillion of dissembling and denial that follows the same patterns and only the costumes' names change.

Last week it was Chee-knee, this week it's attacks on Sotomayor. Next week? Who knows.

But we do know this...when you dance with the skunks, you stink, too. And all the fancy degrees or K Street digs or face time with Wolfie or Tweety or whoever's on the unwatchable network won't change that.

'cause if you are, in fact, a person, then you are policy...and language...either your own or that which serial language-abusers like Luntz put in your mouth.

Ganging up on Nancy

.
Well, the torture boys are in full throated fingerpointing outrage at Nancy Pelosi, with loads of help from the starry-eyed media. Ooooh, food fight....

Nice try at diversion, guys. Who knows, maybe it'll poison the well...or the jury pool, as it were.

Even squeaky-voiced Newt has gotten into the act.

Ooooh, oooh, she knew, she was told, boogah-boogah...

Okay, let's say we assume she was. Let's say we assume she's covering her posterior. Let's assume, being the astute politician she is, she saw the only way she could change things was to take over the Congress, work to take over the White House. Hmmmm. Mission accomplished.

Now the Nancy bashers, on the other hand, for all their red-raced ranting, cannot cover up one clear, simple fact.

Torture was the policy of the Bush-Chee-knee White House. Torture was micromanaged from within the Bush-Chee-knee White House.

History will sort out the rest. And if Pelosi or any other Democrat should have acted differently, we'll ultimately find out.

But right now, do not insult our intelligence [or in the case of too many in the media, show your ignorance or culpability to cover-up] with partisan screeding spin a la Mr. Newtveau Catholique who already has such an excellent track record with women.

Pivoting to gang up on Nancy 'cause you can't lay a glove on Obama and you don't want people [i.e., the easily led media] talking about the fact that your boyo Rove was scheduled to be questioned in the U.S. attorney firings Friday really shows the desperate and pathetic state of the ReThug party these days.

Chee-knee, Rush, Newt, Rove.

Prairie's Reading: Taibbi on Torture

.
Matt Taibbi takes on the absurdity of the if-you're-not-with-us-you're agin-us argument on torture.

You know the one...the rightwing screeders use it all the time. If you're against torture, you're with the terrorists. Heard it as recently as tonight from the lips of Frank Gaffney on Hardball. [pssssst to Schuster...this guy makes me want to vomit a lot more than Miz Prejean Pressboobs does]

Now if you'll excuse me, folks, it's time to take the spaniels into the back yard for a dump...their toxic waste has kept the terrorists away for thirty years...I'm just sayin'.

Four-Letter Words Downsized

.
Well, you knew it had to happen. The GOP has finally downsized the four-letter word.

I started thinking about this today, driving around in the pre-blizzard on black ice, tuning in local [Fargo] talk radio for the latest road reports. A caller diverted from the topic of the local Blues giving their execs beaucoup big salary increases to repeat a FOX LIE that Veep Biden and the AFL-CIO kept the press out of a speech he gave them.

Never mind that FOX itself already debunked its own LIE. But then you can't really call it debunking if they keep on repeating it, now can you?

FOX has taken on a new meta-strategy. RAP. Oh, not the Michael Steele kinda rap. Well not exactly.

The FOX RAP is Roger's Anti-American Propaganda. 'cause make no mistake, Roger and Rush and the rest of the rogues have all decided to declare a war of words on President Obama and his policy changes and initiatives to restore some semblance of democracy and balance to the United States of America.

So the predicate for every sentence uttered from the GOP and the wired-in lapdog media who recite their spin

C&L Totally Nails It

.
John over at Crooks & Liars sums up exactly what is wrong with the media's scurrying to adopt the Republican frame:

The media has completely failed to hold Republicans responsible for their inability to work with the Obama administration.
Why are the Republicans obstructing, stonewalling, delaying, spinning, sabotaging and otherwise doing everything contra to bipartisanship? Oh, that's right, Pete Sessions told us: they are aping Taliban.

The Car Deal

.
There will doubtless be much muttering about Nancy Pelosi "caving" to George W. Bush on the bailout for the big 3. Caving's supposed to be George's speciality. But I guess that only applies to his idiotlogical neocon diehard lobbyists determined to rip the gold teeth outa the cadaver on its way to the grave....

(Anybody else think that if the car guys, the politicians, the media and all the rest of the great chatterati had called this a loan package instead of a bailout, the sell would have been easier?)

Anyway, back to Nancy. Did she "cave"? I guess if you call recognizing that you're dealing with an arrogant, stubborn, stupid, willfully ignorant idiotlogical zealot for the have-more's, so you bow to reality thinking we'll do the best we can till this bozo goes back to Texas and then we can try putting the economy and the rest of the country back together again....then yeah, I guess she "caved."

I choose to think of it as recognizing reality and thanking God he's going to be Laura's mess-only soon, not the rest of us. And good riddance.

In the Tank

.
Earlier today, on his regional show, Fargo's best known talk radio voice bantered about attending the White House Correspondents Dinner and how rude the audience was while students were being presented awards for their journalism. And how the inside talk is that Obama is off his game...while he correctly points out that the media focuses on Obama's bowling rather than his basketball. False-framers, they.

And then we get the National Press Club's pathetic, shallow Q&A for Rev. Wright aired today on C-Span. How often does Barack go to church? Wright turns it right around, prolly 'bout as much as you, questioner....

And MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell push-polling Bill Bradley about whether Rev. Wright is a real story or a media creation, thus furthering the media creation....

Meanwhile, the trade e-newsletter Publisher's Lunch prints a blurb about Huffington Post blogger E.J. Eskow's forthcoming book:
HuffingtonPost featured blogger R.J. Eskow's DEMBACLE: How the Democrats Lost the Unloseable Election, chronicling the two parties in the race for the 2008 White House and how the Democrats blew their chance against all odds, to Drew Nederpelt at Sterling & Ross, for publication November 2008 (world).
Anybody who had any doubt that the struggle to restore America and democracy is a battleground not only against neocon/corporatist Republicans but also what passes for a practicing press corps need only consider the self-fulfilling, self-absorbed lemming Vapid Vapors Media in full search and destroy mode these days.

They've learned nothing from Colbert.

Meanwhile, on a more hopeful note, Aaron Brown returns to the airwaves soon at PBS's Wide Angle. Score one for intelligent journalism.

UPDATE: Froomkin's take on the media, must reading today...and everyday. Another score for intelligence. If only this were soccer, we could declare victory and go home.

Basking Shark

.
THE SETUP:
Basking in the glow of his own self-delusions and hypocrisy, Joe Lieberman told Imus this morning that Harry Reid has assured him he won't lose his seniority...essentially.

As for reports that he'll speak at the Republican convention, Lieberman says: "doubt I'd be a keynote speaker" but "if John McCain asks me to speak I'll go speak...I'm doing what I think is right and not worrying about the politics... I think it's going to be all right..."

"Harry Reid has said you're a member of the caucus, you've been a friend to me...he basically said 'No' they're not going to take Lieberman's seniority away."

THE TALKING POINTS:

On the media-McCain-Clinton conspiracy to drive the "elitist" argument on Obama: "let's hope it's inartful...The comment he made was, I thought, offensive, and will raise a lot of questions."

(Hmmmm. I find a man who refuses to hold hearings in the committee he chairs on the debacle of Katrina offensive...but that's just me. And I find offensive a man whose mixed "loyalties" are on daily display as he attacks Democrats on the days he says he's I-Conn, and then attacks liberals on the days he says he's ID-Conn. But that's me, too.)

Lieberman continues his ongoing McCainiacism by painting Obama as too liberal, anti-Israel, too naive/inexperienced....

THE OOZE:

Lieberman sucks up to Imus by bringing up BPA in order to mention Imus' wife's greening work—her latest book, Growing Up Green now out and available at bookstores everywhere. Will that mention make me an I-Fave?

THE HYPOCRISY:

Hyper-selective-religionist Lieberman apologizes to Imus and listeners before uttering the word "urine." Apologies for failing the NOLA-ites left to piss on the floor in the Superdome?...hmmm, I ain't hearin' it. Apologies for sending men and women into a war based on lies to get their bits blown off so they can never take a normal piss again? I ain't hearin' it. Apologies for turning ordinary American men and women into torturers on the knowledge and approval and micromanagement of the Current Occupant's team of Principals?

I ain't hearin' it from Joe put the lie-in-Lieberman.

THE TELL:

Midway thru the conversation, Imus asks: Lieberman the most bitter man in the Senate? "Well, yeah..."

Audacity of Truth

.

Is it any wonder people are cynical about politicians and the media? Since Huffington Post published an audio recording of Barack Obama talking about the despair of people who cannot count on their government and their elected officials to live up to their campaign promises, much less their oath of office, the full court press of spin and distortion have gone viral.

From Lou Dobbs to Republican pundits to Hardball's Chris Matthews to John McCain's campaign to Hillary Clinton's lips, the self-serving Politics of Screed is on display.

Never mind that Obama is giving voice to the frustrations that ordinary Americans are feeling every day. Never mind that he's showing the best of what a community organizer does--explaining perspectives of people who have been shut out of the process to try to build bridges and community and a better life for everyone.

Never mind that he's telling the truth. How quaint.

When the media make it all about the process, who's up, who's down, who's trending which way, they add nothing to the discourse except more reason for the very folks Obama gives voice to to become even more disenchanted.

UPDATE:
Obama responds swift and strong.
Who's out of touch now?

Lessons in Framing: Sin of Omission

.
How a seed is planted...today's lesson. ABC led its Nightly News with a report on Hillary Clinton and the debunked story of the woman dying because she didn't have $100 for the fee, a story told to Clinton by a deputy in Ohio. Jake Tapper reported and segued into Obama's statement about not taking money from oil company pacs when he did take money from individuals who work in the oil industry.

Tapper's Framing Message? They both do it. Tall tales....

So we'd certainly expect equal fact-checking treatment of John McCain, right? After all, there are now three major candidates in the running for president. Except there's no mention at all. Hmmmm. I guess St. John must be a perfect candidate, eh? Tapper and ABC certainly imply that with the sin of omission.... nothing to see there, move along.

We'll be watching for those fact checks of McCain. Right along with those fact checks of things like the latest reports out of Iraq. And the testimony of Mukasey. Or Petraeus. Or.... We'll be watching. But we won't be holding our breath.

Today, Jake Tapper further burnishes his bona fides as a Republican. ABC slants its reporting against Democrats.

My lesson in framing for today. /s

Im-plausible Deniability?

The dogwhistle's gettin' pretty shrill in Ohio, it seems. Tonight on 60 Minutes, Steve Kroft asked Hillary Clinton whether she thought Barack Obama was a Muslim [which he is not. You can read about it and see the video at CBS News.] My ears perked up at this question, and good golly Miss Molly Ivins, if the ears of Marley and Nova, our resident spaniels, didn't perk up too:

Schoenholtz told Kroft he is leaning towards Obama, but that there were a couple of issues he was “not too clear” on.

Asked what they were, Schoenholtz said, “Well, I'm hearin' he doesn't even know the National Anthem, you know. He wouldn't use the Holy Bible. He's got his own beliefs, got the Muslim beliefs. Couple issues that bothers me at heart.”

“You know that's not true,” Kroft remarked.

“No. I’m just…this is what I've been told,” he replied.

Now, to be clear, Kroft did tell him "you know that's not true." And Kroft did ask Obama about this smear tactic.

Kroft also asked Hillary Clinton about it. And got this for an answer:

“Of course not. I mean, that, you know, there is no basis for that. I take him on the basis of what he says. And, you know, there isn't any reason to doubt that,” she replied.

“You said you'd take Senator Obama at his word that he's not…a Muslim. You don't believe that he's…,” Kroft said.

“No. No, there is nothing to base that on. As far as I know,” she said. [emphases mine.]

Watch the video here

Tone matters, just as words matter. And Senator Clinton does a very artful job of stating a positive and then pulling back, planting seeds of doubt. And judge for yourself whether there's a bit of the ol' artful dodger in those "catch me if you can" eyes as she speaks.

We'll see how this all plays out in Ohio and the other primary states on Tuesday, but one wonders if the candidate who proposes a timeout from trade is also taking a timeout from ethical campaigning.

The Big Dog may have been leashed and put back in the kennel, but the dog whistles sure seem to be blowin' in Ohio.

Prairie Postcard: Weather Eye

T
he local weatherman this morning is alerting us to brace ourselves here in Prairie Country. The wind chill advisory starts at noon, the temperature tonight's expected to drop to thirty below. Hmmm, that doesn't read any easier than -30. That's air temperature, not wind chill factor, by the way.

Weather's a big deal around here. Wind matters, temperature matters, whether we're contemplating planting or harvesting, or just driving to the next town over on a flat windswept highway on a snowy winter day.

A lot of Red Staters take a dim view of that global warming talk when they're lookin' at the likelihood of the coldest temperature since records of such began.

"Global warming" ...just words. But you need to consider the downside of up with words. 'cause they can have a way of coming back to bite you if you don't. "Extreme Weather"...now that covers just about all the bases. "Climate Shift" is kind of namby-pamby, so I'm looking for options on a day when sitting in with a hot cuppa is a lot more appealing than venturing out into "Harsh Weather." "Global Climate Change" isn't the kind of change people want to talk about these days... Maybe "Survivor: Planet Earth."

Preacherman

L
istening to Charles Barkley talk to Wolf Blitzer on CNN this Sunday morning was a powerful lesson in positioning and framing. Barkley said forthrightly that he is pro-choice, he supports gay —“it's none of my business”—marriage, and he moved to Alabama in 2007 and will be running for governor in 2014.

Barkley's a strong Obama supporter and sees him as both friend and role model for the black community. But whoever the nominee is this year, Barkley, who says he's an independent, will be votin' Democratic.

And he took on the Christian conservative meme that the rightwing and the co-opted lazy media have been pushing for years. "Fake Christians," says Barkley, who've annointed themselves the judges, hypocrites who totally ignore the imprecation to judge not and be forgiving.

Does it take a sports icon to gain traction in the media against the judgmentalists who've held sway over the conventional wisdom far too long?

UPDATE: HuffPo's got the video.

Lessons in Framing: The Big Picture

Have you ever tried to build a frame? Not one of the ornate, heavy wood ones, just a simple metal frame? The kind you can buy in two packets at the local hobby store. They’re easy. Just measure your picture and buy one packet for the long side, one for the shorter side. Then a few twists of a screwdriver, slip in a piece of glass, your picture, and some sturdy backing, and fasten together the last side, add the hanger, and you’re ready to go.

See… framing’s easy. Anybody can do it.

And these days, as the political season stays at near-fever pitch, it seems any and everybody is trying to do it. Framing’s coming at us from all sides.

Call it whatever you want…fancy jargon from communications specialists, spin from pundits and consultants, it all comes down to “I’m gonna tell you something, and you’re going to think about it the way I want.” Also known as catapulting the propaganda. Truth is optional.

And these days, as No Child Left Behind—a true bit of false framing if ever there was one—continues to dumb-down the thinking process to rote rather than motes of critical thinking, framing can lead people and whole communities down false paths.

There are a legion of examples this weekend, so it’s worth stepping back a bit and taking a look at the whole business of framing, and the monkey business that too often manipulates it.

The Republican Congresspeople who walked out in protest on Thursday are a nice example of framing gone awry. There they were, staging their departure, dissing the memory of Tom Lantos in the process, walking out to the set-up cameras and podium so they could try to slam the Democratic leadership about “political theatre.” Ooops.

Then last night, on HBO’s Bill Maher Show, one of the high priests of framing, Frank Luntz, tested out a few Republican talking points about Barack Obama while framing himself as oh, not that Republican anymore—I’m wearing a blue collar, open shirt, not one of those “haves” that are Bush’s base. Beware of false prophets…and wolves in sheep’s clothing.

And earlier today, CNN reported by Soledad O’Brien on the black-Hispanic divide between Obama and Clinton supporters [hint: hers are Hispanic, his are African-American…except when they’re not….]

This is a frame in early stages, and there’s considerable potential to build this frame the right way, or the false way. The media will play an important role in how it’s done. Some critical thinking needed here. Not just posturing by “Sharks” vs “Jets.” So far, I give CNN and O’Brien props on their measured reporting [and I'll link to it when CNN gets around to updating its website].

One thought I keep in mind is, who benefits by making adversaries instead of allies of two different groups? Not either one of the groups, that’s for sure. In a political season past, there was advertising showing a black hand reaching for a white hand’s paycheck. Making the paycheck a scarce resource makes enemies. The real enemy is the guy writing the check who’s at the same time pocketing all the ka-ching.

Framing isn’t inherently bad. On Animal Planet Channel this morning, a show presented rottweilers as an intelligent, hardworking, family-oriented dog, playing an important role as therapy animal for acute care patients. Caring people trying to restore the image of a dog breed that was tainted by bad breeders and bad owners and over-breeding. Good framing.

Framing is nothing new, of course, as wobblybits reminded over at Firedoglake this morning, recounting study of how cultures meet and how one culture frames the other. An interesting conversation well worth visiting.

Thing is, framing is everywhere. I could link you to a bazillion examples today. But instead, I’m going to ask you to do a little homework. Listen, really listen, to what someone is telling you. Then look closely at what he or she is showing you, by their actions, by their history, by their context or slice of life.

Then do some thinking. What does that person have to gain by persuading me? And what do I have to lose?

If you can say, I have nothing to lose, and everything to gain, great!

And if you go forward and remember that framing’s just a package, no matter how fancy or finely polished, and the important thing is to focus on the picture within, so much the better.

Lessons in Framing: Typhoid Tweety

Y
esterday Chris Matthews brought his good ol' PFFFFHHHILLLY-it's-a-tough-town-PHILLY friend Ed Rendell onto his Hardball Show to address the controversy of those "alabamans" between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Seemed to me they did less addressing a controversy than having a conflation conversation. Rendell injected Lancaster as an example of an area where the Dems are more liberal within a Red area. He and Matthews did a nifty two-step from seemingly talking about likely primary voting results that could favor Obama vs. a historical "conservative white" pattern that may hold in a general election in a conservative part of the state.

Maybe Chris is feeling like a Typhoid Tweety these days, between the temporary suspension of one of his "reportorial" minions and the blogosphere's buzz about Rendell's ham-tongued explanation of voting patterns in Pennsylvania.

Perhaps his friends and allies wouldn't find themselves in such a stew if Matthews would temper his own tongue. Less "there's Philly and there's Pittsburgh, and in between there's ALABAMA!!!" more presenting issues and events and how they would have impact on real people's lives.

But oh, that's hard. So much easier to catapult the horserace and the Big Number and the sleazy smarmy comments about women...and working people.

[h/t to reader Melody for the framing request. We plan to offer Lessons in Framing—the spin, p.r., hype, fearmongering, half-truths, faux-truths, untruths, and sins of omission that comprise the whole stew as often as the politicians and the media make necessary. ]
