Besides a certain wedding today, there is one other major event of note for May 10, and I am finally stepping out of the shadows to announce my complicity.
Yes, 39 years ago, May 10, the banner-headlined around-the-world Zip to Zap, started by a small but determined bunch of upstarts at one North Dakota college newspaper drew crowds from around the country. And network teevee cameras and global headlines. And the National Guard activated by the governor.
Ah, those were the days. But today too many of our Guard are over in Iraq. And a brief moment of spring exuberance is but a memory, albeit a fond one, to share during these times of remembering too many sad occasions, like Kent State. And making too many new ones.
Oh, but yours truly did sell enough tee-shirts for that day to pay expenses for a summer of interning in Washington DC addressing the Senator’s Christmas cards…to the whole state in an election-upcoming year.
A powerful reminder to moi of why it matters that we keep the new generations involved and inspired for a lifetime of activism…and voting.
