Work "Hard"

.
Just had to comment on a New York Times article posted over at Huffington Post about the "masters of the universe" over at Wall Street pushing back at the uproar over bonuses.

Here's the Times article. Go ahead, give it a read and see if you don't agree with my comment at Huffington Post:

So we who work on Main Street don't work "hard"?

Well, we don't work hard at deluding ourselves, that's for sure. Talk about arrogance, stupidity, and disconnect.

The Budweiser Clydesdales work harder...and to greater national benefit...than these bozos.
And make room for these guys in the Whine Club.

whitehouse dot gov/strongmiddleclass/

.
Veep Joe Biden has the quote of the day: Welcome back to the White House.

Delivered this morning as President Obama signed executive orders establishing the middle class task force which Biden will lead.

For labor unions and enlightened businesses and those who have cared about the well-being of the entire nation rather than just their own elite group, it's been a long eight years in the wilderness. Ignored by the Bush Administration, Ignored by the media who craved their access and stenoed the White House talking points all the way back to "Reaganomics."

One might also say, for those intelligent and common sensical enough to realize that a strong middle class is good for all classes, it's been a long way back.

The President signed multiple executive orders this morning to restore the rights of workers. Those dumb enough not to recognize that, or too dittoized by fearmongering and lies, well, there'll be room enough for you, too, as the recovery begins.

Salut! today, to the Obama Administration for its forward thinking...and forward action to restore the power of the Middle Class.

Recovery dot Gov

.

Watching President Obama discuss the economy, his morning conversation with business leaders, and the recovery plan for the economy. He was introduced by two business leaders, including the head of Honeywell.

They stressed the urgency of bold action, investment in math and sciences...and their strong support for President Obama and his plan.

Ya know what I didn't hear? "Tax cuts."

Republican scolds better take note. Their constituency is shrinking so fast they can soon hold meetings for their base in the men's room at the Minneapolis airport.

.

Tell your Republican Congresspeople to stop the stalling, stop the obstructing...America wants action now.

The Elites Are Different than You and I

.

Last week the Rev. Peter J. Gomes noted to Imus that his appearances on the show are a source of astonishment to his friends. I suspect there's a...lurker or two hereabouts that thinks the same about my viewing the show.

But I find the Imus Show is frequently instructive, in a way that transcends Hardball or any of the Sunday morning shows or the other programming of the sputtering media.

Like this morning, when Senator Joe Lieberman graced the show with his bon mots. We learned during the cozy schmoozefest that Imus and his wife dined night before last with the Assistant Secretary of the Senate, Sheila Dwyer, who grew up across the street from Deidre.

We learned that Lieberman still pauses to see what Imus is going to proffer before jumping on the bandwagon—kinda like back in the day when he never believed a black guy could win the White House, so he jumped ship for McCain in true opportunistic Lieberman fashion.

We learned that Lieberman is still a good ol' warmonger and Repubican at heart.

We learned that Lieberman thinks ol' Harry's a good guy. 'nuff said.

And we learned "let me be the first to offer" young Wyatt Imus an internship...'cause it's still not what you know in Lieberman/Old Washington's world, it's who you know.

Just as long as he doesn't have that Mark Foley thing going.

"Yes, Change Is Here"

.

Lotsa cheap talk about change, and yes, we are already seeing some dramatic examples coming out of the White House since Inauguration Day.

But how will we really know that change has permeated the entire culture?

Here's how I'll know. When I can tune in to an entire week's news cycles and not react to some bit of news with any of the following:

Republicans obstructed, made up...
Democrats caved...
[fill in yer fave newsreader/"journalist"], adopting the Republicans' talking points....

When I go a whole week without once thinking any of those core memes, then I'll know change has happened, change is ongoing, change is real.

What about you? When will you know change is the real deal?

Boycott Beanie Babies

UPDATED FROM FRIDAY.

The Ty Corporation, evidently not satisfied with having their CEO sittin' in jail and trying to top their previous inglorious worst...remember the $6000 shower curtain?....is now marketing "Sasha" and "Malia" dolls. And making the preposterous assertion that they have nothing to do with the President's daughters.

Let's show Ty what we think of 'em: check the label: Boycott ALL THINGS TY.

Oh, and good luck with that next appeal, Mr. Kozlowski. America would love nothing better than to tell you to your face what A**holes you and your company are.

.

UPDATE: This story of flagrant greed has finally percolated up in the mainstream media, via CNN. Now more than ever it's time to nip this kind of abusive exploitation of the Obama daughters...as representative of all little children who deserve better from big biz. Shame on the Ty Corp. Boycott all things Beanie Baby!

GOP leaders = party [building]

They made this mess,
now they want to obstruct cleaning it up.

Are "We" Up to the Challenge?

.

For the last four days we've watched the methodical and sweeping changes President Obama has delivered. We've made much of executive orders on closing Gitmo and restoring funding for family planning global programs and....

We've buzzed over the giant step upward from cowboyness to manhood that defines the arc from Bush to Obama.

We've kibitzed about all manner of changes, from blogs to op-eds. As Frank Rich opines for Sunday, Obama calls on us in austere terms to put aside the shallow and childish for the responsible. Rich concludes, in "No Time for Poetry": While it’s become a Beltway cliché that America’s new young president has yet to be tested, it is past time for us to realize that our own test is also about to begin.

While he may be talking about every American, every citizen, there's one group that needs singling out for special confrontation: Rich's own cohorts in the "mainstream media."

Sunday morning launches as officially as there is the new media age for the Obama years. Sure there were the preliminaries, the predictable rants of folks like O'Reilly, the riffs of Stewart and Colbert, the jockeying for questioning in the WH press room, the nightly news reporters reciting as fact the debunked "61" Gitmo detainees fighting against us.

But it's on Sunday morning that conventional wisdom takes root, that arguments are put forward, that truths are revealed...or hidden or omitted.

How will the Sunday morning gang—John King, Bob Schieffer, George Stephanopoulus, David Gregory—acquit themselves? Will they enable false framing...or confront it? Will they blithely let blatant and debunked numbers slip-slide on by...or will they clearly clarify?

Sunday morning Senators and Congresspeople and the Vice President will sit across from these hosts. Experts on finance and the challenges of the current economy.

Will we hear facts? Or spin? And will the Sunday morning gang be up to the challenge of sorting it out? We'll be watching.

No matter what Chris Matthews or others in the old media may want to tell themselves, being "journalists" is not earned by dint of having a teevee show or a newspaper column.

And the era of infotainment, like the rest of the childish things, must be put aside. Because we're all in this together. And we all are being put to the test.

3 a.m. thinking 'bout parrots

.
Why are the Republicans and their media enablers getting so bent out of shape about shutting down Gitmo?

After all, it's the guys that the Bush Administration let go that turned agin us [two, as last I heard, although the Pentagon and its media parrots are tryin' to pretend it's 61]

... and that level of incompetence has been voted out, inaugurated out, and helicoptered back to Texas.
.

UPDATE: And parroting the Pentagon spin isn't all the media is doing, there's forwarding the Republican b.s. about a nonexistent CBO report to back up their opposition to Obama's stimulus planning. Pssst, fellas, when you downsize your factchecking, you downsize your cred. Just sayin'.

Scientific Inquiry Is Back!

.
Breakthrough! News this morning that the FDA has approved the first embryonic stem cell study. CNN's reporting turned to stumbling back and forth between their anchor and their medical not-Sanjay on which works better, embryonic or adult.

That immediate rush to framing is concerning.

For too long, scientific inquiry, like everything else the Bush Administration touched, was couched in false framing. Or flat-out lies.

I hope that the increasingly self-immolating mainstream media (and see yesterday's link to Hunter) will not be manipulated by dogma from a screeching few ideologues instead of listening, yes, to facts and reason-based opinion on both scientific/medical and ethical considerations .

The media have, for too long, pitted screeching against reality as some sort of "fair and balanced." Now, they are on the brink of "Foxifying" and "Crossfiring" themselves right out of existence.

Because when President Obama [God, I love to say that!) called on all of us to put aside childish things, to grow up, shape up, pull up our britches, by golly, he was talking to the Whine Club of the anachronistic media, too.

Obama's pace of unraveling what BushCo probably "heh, heh, heh-ed" would be tightly bound Gordian policy knots is breathtaking...from issues of security and torture to family planning and medical research. Something reassuring to see that the previous administration has been as incompetent at locking-in their radicalism as they were at everything else they touched.

Now excuse me while I go whip up some scrambled poultry embryos and contemplate the potential this one restoration of science opens for all.

Inauguration Day: Midday

.
President
Barack Obama.

(I couldn't wait --America couldn't wait -- even a minute to say it.)

At exactly noon ET, Barack Hussein Obama is our President.

.
Prairie Central Time

Inauguration Day: Dawn

.
Watching the hundreds of thousands of people already gathering on the Mall in Washington in the pre-dawn darkness of this Inauguration Day and the gatherings of security to keep everyone safe and hearing the reflections...Robert Gibbs talking to Morning Joe and Mika, Dick Gregory talking to Imus, John Lewis talking to Brian Williams, legions of others in recent days...the spirit of joy and euphoria surely must extend from the shores of the Potomac all across this country into all but the darkest of hearts.

Giddiness, almost, as we step out of the darkness and into the light of a new time, a new leader with the promise of hope and change, but also a leader worthy of the mantle we placed on him November 4.

Some say we're too giddy, spending too much money on this day. Some skew the costs and ignore the obvious. Millions will cheer on this day in Washington. Perhaps those number cookers would like to compare costs of inaugurals by cost per person attending, and then see how the numbers play out.

But no matter, even the whine club cannot chill our spirit as we contemplate this day. For already, even before his swearing-in, Obama's inaugural will be America's first jump start for the economy. Jobs, jobs, jobs.

For caterers and cops. For cheesy souvenir sellers. And even impromptu rickshaw services.

So let us all, from sea to shining sea, grin along with Mika and make the most of this day.

No Idle Hands

.
Wielding a paint roller at an emergency shelter for homeless teens in his soon-to-be adopted home city, Barack Obama charged all of us on this national day of service to share in the responsibility to make America better again.

"No idle hands."

If you can't join in the service projects today—you're ill or incapacitated, you're at work, your responsibilities constrain you—then give some thought to what you can do in the months to come. Think about what needs doing...right in your community, your neighborhood, your block.

I'm visualizing the bleak landscape around the neighborhood elementary school around the corner ablaze with flowers planted in the spring by all the folks for blocks around who can share the beauty of their home flower gardens. All it takes is somebody to get it started....

I'm gathering up a collection of necessaries for a gift bag for our local women's shelter. I'll bring it along to our next monthly midday meetup lunch. It was Gale's idea. We all get those gift bags for Christmas or birthdays or valentines. Instead of tossing them, or recycling them for gifts to friends or family, wouldn't it be lovely if every group that gathered for lunch, or tea, or circle, or church, or party brought along gift bags (or items to fill them) and then one of the group would deliver all to the local women's shelter. Or children's hospital. Or whichever charity of need the group decided on for that gathering.

And don't just do it one day, one event. Make it a habit. Help build Gale's Gift Bags from one group to every group. All it takes is somebody to get it started....

I've a call in to the director of our local library system today, the community's moving into a brand spanking new library building this spring and there bound to be ways to pitch in and help make that happen. All it takes....

There's a springtime of spirit across this great land, and even if we're still in the brutal cold harshness of winter with still too many weeks and time before the first green of new life begins to peep out of the snow, that spirit of springtime will sustain us.

And in the meantime, there's much to do. No idle hands.

Great Journeys

.
We are a nation defined by great journeys. Those our parents took to reach these shores, starting in faraway lands, arriving on ships, leaving their footprints on Ellis Island.

An earlier president challenging us to reach for the stars, land on the moon.

So it is fitting that this president-elect chooses to begin his Inaugural moments riding with his family on a train.

He has led all of us on a great quest the past two years, this fellow with the funny name.

We love our symbols, so it was not lost on us, the plane crash. U.S. Air. Why that airline? Planes bracket the last eight years. The planes that crashed on Bush’s watch into the Twin Towers.

And now, the plane that the pilot with the funny name coolly ditched into chilly waters and yet everyone survived. And the pilot himself was last to leave, walking up and down the plane’s aisle twice to be sure everyone else had gotten out safely.

For too long, those who piloted this country, driven by greed and selfishness, sat back and scooped up the nation’s treasure in the name of free market and deregulation while grinding down those whose toil and labors built this land.

And a cold wind blew down from the north, from where some scoff about whether the ice cap is melting, and this week the heartland has been brutal and it’s sweeping across the east, too. Chilling out the old, emphasizing the end of a brutal time for too many. Fillin’ the ol’ coffers is as cold and greedy and selfish as all the age we have come through.

We’re on the brink of a new time, now. A new president who calls us to service to honor our commitment to hope, to honor the generations who came before us to build this land, to reach out a hand to lift up another.

In fact and fiction, we love our great journeys. Boldly going, driving cattle from Lonesome Dove, Wagon Train, Heyerdahl’s Kontiki, two fellows following the path of Marco Polo, the eternal hunger in our spirits to reach beyond the shallow and seek great heights.

Journeys are within as well as across great expanses. We begin a great journey again as a nation. We are all invited to take part. It is not just Obama’s journey. It is not just Washington’s journey. It is for all of us.

And it’s not a journey to Washington to watch an Inaugural. Although that’s a part of it for estimated millions to come.

It’s a journey for all of us in every corner of this great land. To move forward, to rebuild our nation from the embers that still glow and are awaiting the nurturing hand to feed the flame.

Are you fired up? Ready to go?

Then let’s begin again…together.

Bush's Notion

.
As Taylor Marsh points out over at Huffington Post, Bush's notion that he "kept America safe" is the biggest lie of all.
.

The Real Bush Legacy

.
Just in case you haven't seen Froomkin's summation in the Washington Post, Eschaton and DailyKos have noted this excerpt:

Here is Bush's legacy, in part:

He took the nation to a war of choice under false pretenses -- and left troops in harm's way on two fields of battle. He embraced torture as an interrogation tactic and turned the world's champion of human dignity into an outlaw nation and international pariah. He watched with detachment as a major American city went under water. He was ostensibly at the helm as the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression took hold. He went from being the most popular to the most disappointing president, having squandered a unique opportunity to unite the country and even the world behind a shared agenda after Sept. 11. He set a new precedent for avoiding the general public in favor of screened audiences and seemed to occupy an alternate reality. He took his own political party from seeming permanent majority status to where it is today. And he deliberately politicized the federal government, circumvented the traditional policymaking process, ignored expert advice and suppressed dissent, leaving behind a broken government.

Leaves not much to be said, doesn't it? Oh, but Bush intends to have his final say-so tonight.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to tune in. There's an all-important batch of puppy poopsicles in our snowy front yard that needs tending.

Come to think of it, pretty much all of the same....

Watch Parties

.
Where will you be watching the Inauguration? For some, it'll be the local Starbucks. MSNBC and Starbucks are announcing a viewing partnership, and that's just one of many ways you can watch the events.

Savvy cross-marketing for a network that suffers from far fewer media outlets than CNN and Foney News and the resultant crippling of its ratings potential.

Meanwhile, schools are asking--and getting--permission from CNN to carry their coverage. There's talk of big-screen theatre events, also by MSNBC.

Oh, a few scolds remain, but they sound so whiny 20th Century with their partisan talking points right now. Coulter, Ingraham, Beck, Hannity... I'm sick of your schtick....

And schtick it is. Maybe Mickey Rourke can play the movie version.

Foundation of Bush Straw

.
The weakest economy in decades. The House of Bush was built on straw and ephemera.

And churlish gestures like confiscating Blair House so the incoming President and his family were left in the Hay.

George, oh, George, just go away. Lock your gates behind you. Draw up the moats in Dallas.

Substance

The other night on the Daily Show, outgoing White House press secretary Dana Perino chastised the media for not focusing on substance. No argument there...

So here's some substance.

Shiavo Killed the Republicans

Must reading from digby:
the Republican political/media circus over Terri Schiavo was the self-inflicted wound that Bush and Congressional Republicans have never recovered from.

Some might say the press never recovered, either.... we'll see.

War on Drug Prices

.

Senators Dorgan [my homestate] and Snowe [R-Maine] have joined to announce their take-on of the high costs of prescription drugs.

U.S. Senators Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) said today that with a new president who supports the legislation, they expect the new Congress to pass their bipartisan bill that will allow American consumers to safely import lower-priced, Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs from other countries. Dorgan and Snowe said their legislation will bring consumers immediate relief and will ultimately force the pharmaceutical industry to lower drug prices in the United States.

Experts estimate the bill would save American consumers $50 billion over the next decade, including more than $10.6 billion in federal government savings.

Now we have some firsthand experiences of those high pharmaceutical prices in the Sunshine household, so news that Senators have their eye on the pill and the FDA-approved potion is positive.

We're seeing an energized Congress these days, as though the torpor of the Bush years has already been shaken off. You don't need me to tell you how the high costs of every facet of healthcare are contributing to the dire straits of every American family's economy.

Anybody can be one illness away from bankruptcy, loss of jobs with accompanying loss of healthcare benefit, reductions in healthcare benefits just when you may need them most, the stress of trying to help an elder figure out the arcane, Rube Goldbergian choices of insurance coverages.

For too long the scales have been tipped for Big Pharma, Big Insurance, Big Healthcare industry.

No segment of this market can be overlooked or pushed aside in the reform and restoration to people and, yes, common sense in healthcare. When it became a big-ticket industry, Wall Street may have been in the pink, but the rest of the country has been slipping further and further into the red.

Learning that Congress is taking seriously its responsibility to cure the cancer of the existing healthcare system instead of just band-aiding the symptoms in ways that actually cripple the consumer, now that's a good prognosis.

A good prognosis for healthcare, for the economy, and for every individual consumer-patient.

Outed—Blair House Which Project

.

Well, it seems our little question finally gained some traction. Reports are coming in that Rachel Maddow brought up the secret of Blair House on her show Monday night. And then this little item popped up at the WaPoo late Tuesday afternoon. Mystery solved, says the WaPoo. [And just in time to pre-empt more commentary from Rachel, no doubt.]

Seems Blair House is held in splendid reserve and isolation for John Howard, Australia's former prime minister.

Funny thing about mysteries, though, they always have all those red herrings stinkin' up the joint. And this tale's a little fishy, too.

Even though the New York Times' Caucus weighed in with pretty much the same story. And John Stewart made note of the "one more time" from the Dick in the White House.

Yet there seems to be a hole or two in this story...Margaret Carlson said to have told Olbermann her research in December showed no visiting dignitaries scheduled.

There's a whole little buzzlet booming about Blair House right now, but maybe it's time to put this little chapter to rest without causing the former librarian and the soon-to-be-former president any dismay.

After all, they still have that party to plan for and host. You know, the "event" that superseded the Obamas staying in Blair House. I understand it's hosting members of some dim-plomatic group, although the details have been a bit vague.

Could it be the Bush Rangers and Pioneers, the ideological diplomatic corps of the rich and richer who bought this guy, in the drawing room with the silver spoons in their mouths?

Yep,there's all sorts of little plot twists in this mystery tale...and as for the dangling loose threads, well, I'll leave that to someone else to tie up. I've got a beautiful mind that needs cleansing from the Whiches...and the Riches...and the....

Blair House Which Project—Tuesday, January 6

.

By now you probably wonder whether I'll waver. Whether I've the stamina to stay the course and just keep asking the question. Time will tell.

In the meantime, I've been pondering epiphanies—today's the day for it, after all—and wondering whether the press would ever get it...why it matters.

For a moment there, last night, watching John King announcing on the Colbert Report his new Sunday morning gasbag-primetime talk show, I had hopes. After all, he said the most valuable part of the campaign season for him was getting out beyond the beltway to the little towns, talking to the little people about the state of the country. And how he wants to keep that perspective when he launches his new show.

King also reflected on how they [the Very Important Village Media] didn't ask the tough questions of Bush lo' these many years.

And ya know, he's right, and instead of waiting to pile on Obama as Colbert snarked they would, here's a thought.

Because King's replacement over on the White House beat, Kate Bolduan, mentioned something interesting, just in passing yesterday, when talking about the Obama girls leaving the Hay to head to school with the big security convoy.

Did you know the Hay may be a stone's throw away, across Lafayette Park, from the White House? But it's outside the security barrier.

And Blair House is inside the security barrier. Security's the issue, not proximity, seems to me.

So I'm wondering, just what's more important than the security of the incoming president and his family? D'ya think Kate or John or Dancin' Dave or ol' Bob Schieffer or the soon to be only Little George in town or Ruth Marcus or, you know, anybody who moves and shakes in the Village press corps might be persuaded to ask:

Which bunch o’BushCo's “eventing” in Blair House today?

Blair House Which Project—Monday, January 5

.
This links to the Caucus article in the NYT that seems to say that the Obamas will stay at the Hay hyphen Adams until January 20, while other outlets like McClatchy in yesterday’s BHWP post have said the Obamas are livin’ in the Hay until January 15.

Poor handwringing media, they can’t even get their public facts straight. And fergoshsakes, don’t expect ’em to commit an act of reporting — ooh, ooh, booga-booga, don’t make us point out what a no-class thug to the end Bush is being... And what total hypocrites we VVMs are after the media savaging overdrive about the Lincoln Bedroom in the Clinton years now that we’re saying nada about Bush’s confiscation of the entire Blair House.

Party central for outgoing staffers? Is that what’s going on? Or one last round o’fillin’ up the ol’ coffers? Or maybe it’s a book party for Her Ghoulness who evidently has risen from her crypt to press her venomous schtick upon the unwary thanks to the assistance of the lapdog press who built her up.

Is that why there’s been no coverage? No passing reference? No solid reporting? Could it be the Village’s Very Best Media are too ashamed to admit they’re in on the charade? On the guest list for the parties? Like everything else the last eight years?

If so, we deserve to know. It’s a simple question, the tip of the Stunningly Superficial iceberg, one might say.

Which bunch o’BushCo's “eventing” in Blair House today?
.

Any contrary coverage yet that puts a lie to my countdown? All ya gotta do is let me know.

Blair House Which Project—Sunday, January 4

Today is Sunday, January 4, 2009...which bunch o'BushCo is “eventing” in Blair House today?

For the last eight years Team BushCo has treated the treasury of the US as its own personal plaything. Breaking it totally in the process. So far I haven’t seen any news reports—just Lester Holt and Michael Beschloss tellin’ me Friday all about the historical significance of the Hay-Adams Hotel and all the high-falutin’ people who have stayed there over the years just a stone’s throw away from the White House.

And Saturday Michelle and the Obama girls arrived in Washington to take up temporary residence in the Hay-Adams because the cheesy innkeeper-in-chief says there’s no room in the Blair. The President-elect is scheduled to join his family today. You’d think the Bushies would’ve had an Epiphany by now...but no, that’s still two days away. For most of us.

So, in the meantime, maybe it seems a small point, but it is a point to ask:

Who’s “eventing” in Blair House today?
